Use
Years of repetitive movements or heavy use of the hands may also contribute to joint problems.
Are the Bumps Painful?
Heberden’s nodes can be painful or tender, particularly when they first develop.
The affected joint may also become:
- Red
- Swollen
- Tender
- Stiff
- More difficult to move
Morning stiffness may occur as well.
Interestingly, the pain may decrease over time even though the bony bump remains.
Some people eventually have little or no pain and notice only the visible change in the shape of the finger.
