Which Way Should Toilet Paper Hang? The Answer Might Surprise You

Few household debates are as strangely persistent as this one:

Should toilet paper hang over the top of the roll—or underneath it?

Most people have a strong preference, and some families have probably had the same argument for years. But there is an interesting piece of history behind the debate.

The Classic Answer: Over the Top

The traditional position is to have the loose end hanging over the front of the roll, facing the person using it.

Why? It is generally easier to see and grab the loose sheet, and the paper is kept farther away from the wall behind the holder. Some hygiene experts argue that this can reduce the chance of the paper touching a potentially dirty surface.

There is also a famous historical detail that seems to support the “over” camp.

What Does the Old Patent Show?

In 1891, inventor Seth Wheeler received a U.S. patent for perforated toilet paper. Illustrations accompanying the patent show the paper coming over the top of the roll.

That image has become one of the most popular pieces of evidence in the over-versus-under debate.

But there’s a catch.

The patent was primarily concerned with the design and perforation of the paper, not establishing an official rule for how people should hang toilet rolls. A patent expert analysis points out that the drawing alone doesn’t prove Wheeler intended to settle the orientation debate.
