You may have seen small glass tubes containing tiny steel ball bearings in antique tool collections. These are not random objects—they are precision components from bullseye levels, also known as machinist’s or spirit levels.
Unlike traditional levels that rely on a single bubble in a straight vial, bullseye levels use a circular, dome-shaped design to measure levelness in two directions at once. This allows for more accurate alignment, especially in detailed mechanical or industrial work.
In some older European and specialized models, the usual liquid bubble was replaced with small steel ball bearings. These balls naturally roll to the lowest point, making it easier to identify true level from different viewing angles. In certain designs, three balls were used together to provide a clearer and more precise reading.
