The first time you open your trash can and see maggots, it can be a shocking experience. The smell, the movement, and the sudden realization that your garbage is alive can make you wonder if something is seriously wrong.
But maggots are not a sign that your home is dirty. They are simply fly larvae taking advantage of a perfect environment: warm temperatures, spoiled food, and access to trash.
Flies can quickly enter a bin, lay eggs on leftover food, meat scraps, or other organic waste, and disappear. Before you notice anything, those eggs can hatch and the larvae begin feeding.
